Hello guys,

Have been suffering from abdominal pain, so my GP took a urine test and it showed blood and glucose. As a result I was prescribed antibiotics for a suspected urinary tract infection.

The fact glucose was also found was a little worrying, so I have been booked in for a blood test next week.

I have had two blood test in the last 12 months, first showing higher normal levels, a 2 months later the second showing normal.

Today I picked up a Blood glucose meters, was was a little disturbed with the fasting result of 12mmol/l.......could the UTI be effecting the results? should I tell my Dr?

If you are worried you should certainly go see your doctor and discuss. He can give you a fasting blood test or better an hBA1c test that will tell you you average sugar level over the last 3 months or so. 12 is high but it maybe down to the infection. Guidelines are to be below 8 two hours after eating and between 4 & 7 at all other times. If it turns out you are diabetic the quicker you deal with it and accept what that means in terms of life style changes etc. can add years to your life and stop you getting really bad stuff like going blind and having amputations etc so don't delay is my advice.

Infections will cause glucose to be found in urine, and makes bg levels higher than normal. It would be worth asking your gp to do a blood test to see if you are diabetic or not if you have been found to have higher levels in the past. Also you can go into any Lloyds pharmacy and they will do the basic finger prick test and will tell you the results and advice to see gp also they will give you a referral letter to your gp as well.
