Hi guys ive recently started carb counting insulin regime but I was wondering if its possible to take an e,tra injection after ive eaten. For example tonight ive had tea but im.still.hungry would it be ok to leave it a while then take another injection to have something else or is there things I can eat that are loe carb ?
Thanks.in advance xx

Hi Lauren it depends on what else you are planning to eat for example if you had 1-2 dry biscuits or a bag of quavers then theres no need to add any insulin, i was told that to have a extra 10grams of carbs is fine. Maybe check your sugars before you have something else to eat.

Hi Lauren-gee-x!

You need to be careful with eating again and taking extra insulin. You really need to leave time for the insulin you've taken to leave your system, otherwise you might send yourself into a hypo. Even rapid-acting insulin can hang around for about 3 - 4 hours, so taking more within 4 hours can mean you're layering it, which is difficult to control. You'd be better eating low-carb snack if you're hungry. My current favourite is brie melted in the microwave (20 secs should do it) and then spread on a slice of ham - roll the ham into a tube and scoff! No carb - no insulin needed!

Depending on your insulin it may be possible to do your injection after eating. It can be easier to calculate since you know what you have eaten.

Personally I usually inject after my first course but before any pudding if I'm having one. I put my pen on the table as I'm laying it so I don't forget to do it. I do try and add up the carbs before eating though, it's easier when I still have the plate in front of me. It's nice to be able to add a little extra if I feel like it, or indeed not to finish the serving without worrying.
