Can you just use rapid acting insulin?

Hi, I know I'm not talking to Drs on here, it's your views I'd like.

I'm in the honeymoon and just before Xmas I had so many hypos I cut my intermediate acting Humulin I insulin down gradually until I stopped it all together. I've tracked my sugars and keytones and providing I eat sensibly I dont need insulin as mysugars stay in the normal range.

Am I taking a huge risk living without my intermediate and opting to take just fast acting if I go a bit high? I will talk to DSN but their track record on doing anything but straight forward stuff is lousy. So some insight from those at the sharp end would be great.

I would think you are doing the right thing so long as you keep testing to monitor your levels and also get your hba1c done every 3 months. There are people who develop Type 1 who alter their diet/do lots of exercise and live without any insulin during the honeymoon. I have mainly read reports of people in the Forces doing this as once they start insulin they are medically discharged. Just keep in mind that your honeymoon may stop abruptly or drag on for ages.

yes I agree.
As long as you are keeping an eye on your blood sugar so it doesn't creep up, you are doing the right thing.
Many insulin pumps only use rapid acting insulin, drip drip dripping a little bit every few minutes. So there's nothing magic about longer acting types, it's just whether your combo of insulins and number of injections is doing the job for you. And it sounds as if it is, for the moment.

I agree with the others, if you are testing regularly and you are getting good numbers on diet and excercise which is sustainable at least for however long you " need" to do it, then I say go for it.
....The smaller amount of insulin needed the better in my book so long as it keeps you well and with good figures. Why chase Hypos with unnecessary food ,you will just need more insulin and put on weight which in turn will require more insulin over a period of time.
If you can get good control on just the one..why complicate matters! As Snodger says a pump therapy is just the drip drip of fast acting....but you must carry on checking ,and depending on how long your HM period is AND how strong it is, only time will tell.
You may be lucky,it has been documented that with some people it can last years

Good luck and happy new year
