Cannula needle not inserting.

Hi, my problem is this and I'm wondering if anyone has experienced the same thing. Recently when changing my cannula I have noticed that my sugar level has been really high, and when I have taken cannula out to change it to somewhere else, I have realised that the cannula has not even pierced the skin, just sort of bounced off of it and sat on the surface, so no insulin is actually being delivered. It's is happening more and more when I change my cannula and I have been quite ill with keytones because of it. It's really getting me down and I'm thinking of coming off the pump. Feels like my skin has just had enough of the abuse and is saying 'no more!'.

Sorry not heard of this happening. What sets and pump are you using ? I suggest that you need to meet your DSN urgently to re-visit your insertion teqnique as I wouldn't have through it was anything to do with the actual sets themselves. Saying that, have you tried a set from a new batch in case?

Hi

Not sure from reading your msg on how many years you have been using a pump but if the problem is not down to the technique you are using (sets that go in with an inserter need the inserter to held firmly against the skin before releasing the spring), then have you tried using steel needle sets? Steel needle sets don't tend to bend and will pierce boot leather

Hi, thanks for comments. I'm currently using the DanaR insulin pump, been on it for almost 3 years now. I have one of those egg cup infusion set inserters which I have always used as you say, held firmly against the skin and pressing the buttons on each side simutaneously. I did try the metal cannulas for about 6 months but I found they peeled/rubbed off too easily so I went back to the Teflon cannulas about a year ago. This problem has only been going on for the last 3 weeks.

Not sure but I think the Dana R has a special luer connection so not sure what other sets you could try. Maybe you could try something similar to the Accu chek Tenderlink which goes in at an angle or see if using your existing sets from another batch number are better.

Isn't that inserter one you are meant to replace every so often? I'm not on the same one but I remember seeing something similar on my pump training and being told it wears out and then causes insertion problems. Might be worth trying a new inserter?
