I've doen that before now, as I'm sure have many others. If you do find yourself drifting high, you can always correct at the next meal with additional short acting to get you through until your next basal dose.
It can easily happen especially in a morning when we are rushing about, you can get devices that fit on the end of insulin pens that reminds you when you last injected, one is called Timesulin and I just forget the name of the other. I use Novorapid so thankfully get issued with the Novopen Echo which has a timer built into the pen, could do with something similar for my lantus insulin as there's times where I have that eliment doubt if I've injected or not
I dont often do it I have to be honest, and Im getting the pump in 41 days so its not worth it now. I think there have been a handfull of times I have done this. Just annoyed at myself as it was a shock how high i was :x
The new line of NovoPen's (NovoPen 5 I think) has time cap so you can log the times you use it, which may help in the future.
I sometimes forget to do my levemir, which means my sugar level is very high sometimes. I have started to note down when and where I take my insulin, which helps sometimes.
