Can't stop thinking about diabetes

I know its hard but it will get easier with time. I felt exactly the same at first as it was all I could think about 24 hours a day. Over time I have accepted it and learned to live a normal life again. Not a.type 2 though but have read previous posts about other type 2 having bad side effects from metformin and were swapped to a different type of med , think out was a slow release one. Would be worth discussing with your doc if you are having bad side effects. I'm sure other type 2s will be along to help. Joining this forum is a great place to start to help you. Ask any questions you may have and hopes you feel better soon.

I was diagnosed mid January this year. I too am in a diabetes-obsessed state. At first I was resentful and low thinking of all the things I will miss. Double caramel magnums, all day sessions in the pub with friends and pint after pint of lovely lager, mashed potato, etc. and the blood testing and medication. Ugh.

I feel like I'm becoming a Diabetes bore to my husband and friends. I am conscious how much I am talking about myself and the big D. Testing, recording foods, logging results, meds and carbs, being happy when a low read comes in (then doubting it) and feeling bad when the reading is high. Spending hours on this site and blood sugar 101 and ordering books from amazon on foods (Wheat Belly, anyone? Fat Chance?)

My fear is now this: it's only been a few weeks for me, I am vigilant now and have seen immediate benefits - Weight loss, bloat reduction, and most importantly my BG levels are decreasing. My fear is that I will lose this obsession, become complacent, and fall back into old eating patterns. This can't happen. The stakes are too high.

My advice with metformin is to take it during a meal..by that I mean, eat half your meal.
Swill it down with a glass of water, then take the med. Then continue with your meal.

If you follow the newcastle diet, you could possibly reverse your condition but once diagnosed you are a diabetic.
BUT.... If you adjust your eating and exercise regime you could possibly be taken off metformin.


That said, metformin can help prevent many harmful and deadly conditions.
I'm not at all convinced that I am type 2 ( my doc had to go in the web to diagnose me) but I will continue with metformin regardless.

Stick with it.... And let's see how you are in a month!

Hi Bronte1660. An HBA1C of 11.6 is very high. After the shock we all feel at diagnosis, it will settle. Meanwhile I'm afraid Metformin does help but won't reduce your sugars by that much. Have you started a serious low-carb diet? Diet is the first stop in treating diabetes. Once your body weight is near 'average' your HBa1C should come down. If it doesn't then further meds can be added such as the common ones Gliclazide and Sitagliptin. If you are young and not overweight then it's always possible you are a late onset T1 not T2. So, if diet and meds don't bring you below an HBa1C of 7'ish then discuss other diagnosis possibilities with the doc. Sadly diabetes can't be cured but if you are an insulin resistant, overweight T2 then low-carbing should have quite a dramatic effect and even make it possible to come off Metformin in the longer-term. BTW if you are not on Slow Release Metformin (SR) then do insist that your doc changes your prescription to this kinder version.

Last year I climbed Cave Hill in Belfast. Standing at the bottom looking up I thought, "I'm never gonna do this! Look how high it is!" But I stopped looking up at the peak. I took small steps and a slow pace and rests. I made it by only focussing on what was just in front of me. A cheesy metaphor I know but so apt for showing how we should approach the mountain in front of us now. Stop worrying about how you're going to make it through, and focus on the step that's in front of you now.
