Can anybody tell me if there is a specific amount or range of carbs eaten when following a low/moderate/high carb diet? Not really sure how many I should be eating each day...

Hi @Hollieo4
this is a really good question for us type 1's
I was diagnosed back in the day when restricting carbs was not even on the radar.

over the past few years I have found that by running in a range of between 80 - 180 carbs per day ( averaging about 120)
with these sort of numbers and timing bolus doses I maintain a pretty good level of control , and also have a life in which I am not continuously stressing about exactly what I eat.

for example -- tonight evening meal was a roast dinner including roast potato ( 36 carb)
and roast parsnip ( 15 carb ) plus asparagus , broccoli , carrot and swede ( 8 carb)
roast lamb ( 0 carb ) and some gravy ( 4 carb )

You'd probably get away with next to no carbs at all providing you get your calories from other sources. I don't count carbs, I just reduce them to a minimum by avoiding things like potatoes, rice, bread and cereals and limiting the amount of moderate carb content from vegetables and avoiding high carb fruits.
If you are trying to lower your blood glucose levels the best way to do it is to measure BG before and after meals and see how different foods and quantities affect you.
I'm sure others will pop up here and provided you with details about quantities of carbs related to body weight/weight loss as there are data available.
Sorru I can't be more specific.

this advice can potentially work when taking only oral meds but introducing insulin ( as a type 1 ) does make the answer a bit more complicated.

Yes indeed! I didn't spot Hollie was T1 . Sorry!

@Hollieo4 I believe low carb for type 1's begins at 30-42 carbs a day (Richard K. Bernstein, M.D., author of Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution, 4th Edition). In general, for the upper range, I'm thinking it tops out at 150 carbs a day, but I've heard others here say 120 carbs a day.

I'm a type 2 and don't inject insulin so don't have hypos. My range is probably 40-60 carbs a day, in part because I include lots of vegetables with all meals so I regularly bounce in and out of ketosis. I eat no or minimal sugar, grains, and starches.

For the diet to be ketogenic, the upper limit is 50 carbs a day.
