my son is 9 and he was diagnosed with type 1 in may. he needs 20 to 30 carbs for snacks but lately he has taken crisps and an apple to school but he hasent been eating his apple and his bloods have been dropping to 4mmol at lunch time im trying to find good ideas for snack time at school that he can just eat quickly and go and play. does anyone also know what is the ideal ratio between carbs and of which are sugars e.g carbs 30 of which are sugars 10 is one third ok !!

Hi, yes I do make my own and can pm you a great recipe if you want. they are very easy to make as you basically chuck everything in a bowl and mix!

I keep about the same snacks as Leggott. You have to be a bit careful what yogurt you buy though. I find some here have up to 40gm carb per 100gm where others have 12gm carb per 100gm. Khaleb like Cruskits now also. They are really light and you can put any assortment of things on them. I make muffins that I grate carrot, zucchini or apple into. It doesn't affect the taste of muffins not to put as much sugar in as the recipes recommended. I also keep the little kids containers of fruit (diced or puree). Having a milk type drink like those breakfast milks are also a quick fix. They are called Up & Go here but could be completely different in the UK.

I found a great carb snack before I went on my holidays and did canoeing, hiking etc and they really helped with keeping my levels fairly constant. They're called .tesco.com/superstore/xpi/0/xpi61960020.htm] Raisin Crispy Slices and they are 11g of carbs per slice, and in the pack the slices are sealed in packs of 3 and cost only 99p for 15 slices. They taste really good too which is a bonus

Cugila, I didn't realise that was for massive corporations as well. Woops. Can you at least fix my post so it makes sense instead of having a half link in there making it look :?

That's quite a large amount of carbs for a snack. My daughter's snacks are on average around 9 or 10g carbs. I only know my daughter and how her insulin works with her but is it possible that your son's insulin dose needs adjusting so that he can have a smaller size snack. That might make it easier for him to eat something small quickly so that he can get on with the important things in life like playing with his friends. It's just a thought.
