Hi All,

Just trying to understand what I see on packets to the guidelines here on the forum. e.g. Slice of Warburton bread Carbohydrate "18.9g of which sugars 0.9g".

Assuming its the 18.9 I need to count against the forum guidelines, what does the 0.9 represent? Is it important ?

Low carb (ketogenic) 0-50g carbohydrate per day
Typical low carb 50-90g
Liberal low carb 90-130g
Moderate carbs 130-170g
High carb 170g plus a day

I noted the daily guideline on the packet was 230g per day !
Thanks in advance
Paul

Not really. The 18.9 will be largely the processed flour, which will turn quickly to glucose in your body.
That's the important figure.
The 0.9 is probably sugar (in some form) added to the bread mix by the manufacturer.

Hi, similar answer posted while writing mine - the 'of which are sugars' refers to actual sugar or anything ending on 'ose' (eg fructose) but carbs come from starch as well. Assume manufacturers think we want to know because we should not eat too much sugar and makes them sound health conscious. (Think they forgot starch converts to glucose). I think you have worked out 230g may be a bit too much for a diabetic!

OK got it - thanks everybody for the replies

Looking round the cupboards in the kitchen, i've found some real shockers. The warburtons bread I was talking about looks all brown and healthy but is just 1g less carb than the white bread next to it. I think i'm about to become a label bore

lol, I hate shopping, it now takes a bit longer cos I have to read the labels.
