Having been newly diagnosed only last week (I'm due to see the diabetic nurse next week) I am going to ask for a monitor. However, if they say no I'm going to buy one. My question is, if you have a meal and test your levels how do know what foods can cause a spike.

Anything with enough carbs will cause your blood sugar to rise. In general, the more carbs, the higher/longer the rise.

If you test yourself before eating and then two hours after you will see the difference between the readings.

Many forum members seem to agree that any rise over 2% should be seen as a 'spike.'

Not 2%, but 2 mmol/L.

Suspect you meant to say 2 mmol rather than 2%!
