Hi all. I have a newbie question.... I'm trying to have low carbs, and I see people mention grams of carbs on here. What amount is a starting point for someone lowering carbs in grams? When I check nutrition info, do I look at total carbs or carbs that sugar?? Does this make sense?

Total Carbs @Pandle , this is because all carbohydrates turn into glucose easily in the body.

The reference intake for carbohydrates is 260g per day. As an indication, I consume less than 150g and I think there are a couple of people around here eating around 50g. You have to experiment and find out what suits you, there's no one-size-fits-all answer.

Hello. Answering the second question first, ignore the sugar content of the carbs and go by the total carbs. It's all sugar as far as diabetics are concerned.
Answering the first question, if I understand, is (for myself) to look for things that are from 0 carbs, or as good as 0, up to about 4 carbs in any portion. That might be a big helping of a veg or a teaspoon of something sweet.

Aim for foods containing less than 5% Carbohydrate, less than 10% is OK in smaller portions.

Thanks all. I've been having one meal that contains carbs, 50g of w/m pasta for instance. Am I better just dumping it altogether? My monitor is on its way, so haven't a clue at mo of bs. The other meals or snacks I have I try to avoid the carbs. For instance Greek yogurt for breakfast, then a protein-y lunch like chicken breast or smoked haddock, with veg. Snacks are currently nuts, Philadelphia with lettuce, or handful of berries. Can I have berries on a daily basis, or are they more of a once a week thing?

I eat berries every day, but see how they go with testing to be sure. I eat about 50g carbs a day and if I even look at pasta, I swear it affects my BGs. Just kidding, what I mean to say is pasta spikes me a lot. You may well find the same thing when you test. I have dumped all pasta, rice, potatoes, bread and cereals and I feel great for it.

To the avoid list add Couscous which is also a form of pasta

How is quinoa for carbs? Is there a list anywhere of carb values for veg? I've been swapping potato with squash but don't know the values! I'm sorry for the silly questions - I'm such a newb.

you can find out by googling the name of the food followed by "carb".
