Hi all!

I'm getting more and more ready to invest into a CGM and my choice is on Dexcom G4 right now. But I've been seeing a lot of news about G5 coming up and other companies like senseonics and Abbott working on new stuff. So I don't want to buy G4 and see the news that there's a new, better thing released the next day.

So I'm curious - has anyone heard of anything new coming up soon? I can't find any real info on when senseonics is planning to release their device, Abbott is doing a big campaign on a "14-day sensor wear", "new and amazing", etc, etc new device, but there's no details (http://abbottnextfrontier.com/) at all! And G5 is supposed to be available next year?
If anyone knows any dates/estimates/new stuff - please share!

The trouble is Pauline it's a bit like mobile phones and any other device, they are soon superseded in no time at all. it will be great when the time comes where they are more readily available at a price that isn't too costly to run.

I hope they will be cheaper soon! :)

I just want to make sure that if I make a decision to buy it next month, there's not going to be a "new cool thing" released in August :)

Same here! Effectively no use of CGMs in the medical system where I live, so I will need to self invest either via USA or UK - if I'm paying to do so, I want the latest shiny toy!

Pity they don't get cheaper as another comes to the market, a bit like mobile phones :)

Hi Paulina

I can't see how the way that CGM works is going to change radically any time soon. It needs 3 elements, a sensor to measure interstitial glucose, a transmitter and a pump/monitor to display the results. The transmitter only has a relatively short life so you won't be stuck with an out dated product for years should there be any advances on the horizon. My Medtronic transmitter has so far lasted 3 years-which is a lot longer than I was told it would -although the sensors don't seem to last as long as the Dexcom. I have used CGM for 3 years now and there hasn't been any "cool new thing" invented in that time to replace it. I want it to measure my interstitial glucose and warn me when I am going hypo and most of the time it does just that.

The real breakthrough would be a reduction in cost. I can't think of any extra bells and whistles that would enhance it apart from a sensor and transmitter that are affordable and last for a decent length of time giving accurate results.

Are you able to try one from your diabetes clinic to see if it will help you before considering buying a system?

you can recharge batteries under the skin through induction, like they do with implants already

Unless you live in the USA you will not be able to purchase CGM or sensors from there as you need a valid prescription for them. UK is non prescription.

Thanks for the headsup! Fortunately my sister is a medic in the States so I'm sure a visiting consultation with suitable specialist can be arranged. Not relying on insurance so I understand actual residency should not be an issue. But UK may be easier to organise.

Hi... I´m new here, I´m from Spain...
abut new abbot flash... isn´t a CGM. I have some information about it.
It´s a semi-GCM, since it reads in real-time but only when you aproxime the receiver to the transmitter (NFC), then, you can see the measure, and it can draw graphics, but never is CGM, since you haven´t alarms or tendences.

It´s a low cost CGM (really seems a "software" down, it could be reading every 5 minutes how dexcom), seems in Spain will be avaliable (public health system) to people is spending more 5 strips day (I have 10 assigned), but not because it´s better to us... simply because it´s cheaper for they.

about prices... here was talking about 100 euros/month (about 70 pounds).

But really nothing comparable to dexcom, I´m user from 5 years ago and to my life, is perfect.

Regards

Ahh, thanks for that! I was actually interested in that, but couldn't find any information whatsoever. So it's basically more like a replacement for finger prick tests - because you can get a result whenever you want, without the blood test, but it's not continuous like a cgm?

Thanks a lot for that info!

Yes PaulinaB... I was interested too (a lot) since I´m paying out of my pocket the expensive Dexcom system... and this systems is promised to be free to us here in 1-2 years (they are testing now in small groups), but I have information about it and not... not comparable to full CGM, where you can get alarms or arrow tendences, and I think they are important (detect hypos or know if you are going to get one).

with this system yes, it´s a replacement for people it´s spending 5 or more strips day..., it will be more comfortable and fast (well, about comfortable, you need a transmitter and a hard wire, not flexible how dexcom).

and you can get graphics (and this is a bit confused to people think it´s MCG), but that graphic it´s only generated from your measures (taken one to one), it´s a past tendence, and supossed tendence, not real tendence...

if you have 80....and 30 minutes later... 130... and 30 minutes later 160... it will generate a graphic with that (It will think you go to 190 at next measure)... but suddenly, from 160 youj go to 120... dexcom and similars will detect that... abbot not.

abbott new systems is a replacement for finger test, only.

regards (and sorry for my bad english)
