Is it essential to update your cgm with meal details (carbs, times, ect)

No. I have never recorded my food with my CGM.
Others find it useful if you want.

It's helped me a lot, so maybe give it a go for a couple of weeks or so, and if you don't find it helpful you can stop.

I don’t put meal details in, but log times of carbs, insulin and exercise. I don’t always put the carb totals in but always log that I’ve eaten food. It helps with timing for insulin splits and knowing when I’ve actually eaten.

I never do… my care team never asks for details…. It’s only really for your reference so the choice is yours

It all helps you control your BG (you can decide if you need to alter insulin to cope with the food intake).

The idea being if you keep a lower average BG there will be less health impacts in the long term (retinopathy, heart disease, infections etc etc) - T1 can be a slow degenerative killer if you run high over years - personal choice but I'd rather be aware of whats hitting my system and keep in BG range.
