Hi, I was diagnosed type 2 nearly 12 months ago. I was prescribed metformin.

I'm supposed to be having bariatric surgery (gastric bypass), 3 weeks on Monday.

I went for my 6 month check on Tuesday and had bloods done. I'd also had bloods done at my preop assessment 3 weeks ago.

Both my sugar and cholesterol are high and at the request of my surgeon I've been prescribed saxagliptin (this is relatively new I think as my pharmacist has had to order it in) and atorvastatin.

When the nurse rang me she said I'd to be on these new tablets 2 months before the op would be done. I am totally devastated as I was so excited about the op. I have emailed the surgeons secretary and I'm going to an education class on Monday. But this news has ruined my weekend

Has anyone had their op postponed due to high sugar and cholesterol levels? And has anyone had any experience with saxagliptin?

Thanks for reading

That's unfortunate that they've delayed your operation but they must think it's in your best interests to do so, not sure about cholesterol but they are normally reluctant to do operations when someone's diabetes isn't very well controlled.

yes, you need your BG in range for the body to heal afterwards
you may be able to help yourself get your bg down in the next 2 months, ask your Dr about the following

Newcastle university diet aims in 8+ weeks to mimic or better the rate of ~80% remission, for surgery T2.
original trial, with a letter for your Dr "It is now clear that Type 2 diabetes is caused by abnormal fat storage. Research on how this may be reversed is available. "

they are currently running a 5 year trial http://www.diabetes.org.uk/About_us/News_Landing_Page/Low-calorie-liquid-diet-study-launched/

or I would ask about doing this for a week to get off the carbs first, I know I had a lot of trouble
http://www.dietdoctor.com/lchf it’s a long page and a video
http://lowcarbdiets.about.com/od/lowcarbliving/a/Food-Cravings.htm because carbs don’t give up easy.
