Hi
I am female and have had type 1 diabetes for 9 years, reasonably well controlled and until July/August 2010 I was injecting twice a day with Mixtard 30/70 mix. As this insulin was being discontinued, I changed onto using Levemir insulin twice a day (morning and before bed) and novorapid before meals. A few months after changing my insulin regime, I started noticing my hair thinning. Previous to this I had a lot of hair! Long and healthy! My hair thankfully does still grow (I am able to see re-growth at the top), which indicates there is no damage to my hair follicles but continues to thin. I have had several blood tests done by GP, Thyroid and everything else was fine. My GP referred me to a Dermatologist and after being on a waiting list for about 2months, I seen them last month. The dermatologist confirmed, after looking at my hair and scalp that I have experienced hair thinning and advised unfortunately it is difficult to pin point what could be the cause of this. When mentioning the hair thinning being linked to the change of insulin, both my GP and the Dermatologist thought it would not be the case.
I went to the Diabetic Clinic today and mentioned to the nurse and Dr about my hair thinning again(I had mentioned this once about a year ago to them but it did not seem to be a cause for concern) I asked about changing my insulin from Levemir to Lantus. It was recommended to me by the doctor that I instead change from Levemir to Humulin I and continue with Novorapid, I plan to start using the Humulin I insulin on Monday, hoping that over a period of about 6months, I will be able to tell if the Levemir did have an effect on my hair!
Has anyone else had issues with hair thinning whilst on insulin?
And is anyone else familiar with taking both Humulin and Novorapid? I hadn't heard much about Humulin insulin before talking to my diabetic team today!
I would be greatful if anyone has any advice!
