Changing Medication

I was diagnose type 1 last year and put on Lantus and Novorapid. Been getting steadily more active and have reduced Lantus from 14-8 units per day and Novorapid from 12 units per day down to 6. HBA are typically 5.4.

I have background retinopothy and very sensitive feet, but do not suffer from HYPOs unless I take too much insulin before a strange meal.

Consultant has today said I should stop taking insulin and switch to taking Metaformin. I am a bit concerned as I am happy on insulin and content with my HBA levels. Is this a step forward or backward?

Grateful for any advice,

Keith.

If you are type 1 I would have thought that it would not be too long until you would need insulin.

It's possible you are still producing some, my dad was 'honeymooning' for about 18 months then nothing.

I've been honeymooning for 9 months..

Maybe they suspect you are type2???

If that was me I would go for it. I would consider that good news and worth a try to see if it works for you. If your figures go back up then you need the insulin injections but if you stay stable and keep good control I would view it positively and certainly not consider it a step back . Less/ or no Hypo's, fantastic news

Go on how you feel though, if things are working for you perfectly now , well it's still worth a try IMO but if you don't "feel" as good on the Met insist on going back to insulin...I would clarify this first with the Endo though just to make sure they are open to you going back to your injection regime if you don't feel the Met a success.

Good luck and let us know how you get on :D

In your situation I'd be wanting to ask the consultant WHY he thinks a change to metformin is a good idea... is he thinking maybe that you are not actually type 1? Has he done a test for MODY?
If you are MODY then metformin might work for you, but if it is a case of honeymooning type 1 then you will need insulin again very soon indeed.

If it were me, I would want a test for pancreas function done before changing meds. I.e. I would want to know if my pancreas is still able to produce insulin at all. (And to be honest... even then I think I might well stay on insulin... I kind of like the flexibility insulin gives).
