Channel 5 News Item

Did anyone else catch a Channel 5 news item last Friday (22nd) on new Type 1 diabetes research in the US? Unfortunately, I didn't hear all the report, but it gave the impression that this new technique/treatment could reverse Type 1 within a year of commencement.

I've tried since Friday to track down the item on the internet, but it's proving surprisingly difficult to find any mention of it. Or did I just hallucinate the whole thing?

Many thanks for helpful replies!

Was it the study with the BCG vaccine?
The Telegraph had an article on it.

It might have been, Helen. The only bit I caught was about how they reckoned it would reverse Type 1 within a year. Is that what The Telegraph is saying?

I'm fortunate not to suffer the condition myself (as yet), but a good friend of mine's 4-year old granddaughter has just been diagnosed. I'm desperately trying to give him and the family some good news - if I can find it, and it's genuine.

Thanks for your reply!

If it was the Telegraph article here's the link in my post in this thread.

There was also an article by the DCUKbot about it as well last week.

I think I saw something about it by DCUK Newsbot. Try a look in the Diabetes Research/News s3ction of the forum, it's near the bottom of the forum list. Good luck.

A lot of this research is aimed at people who still have lots of beta cells, protecting the bete cells from the immune system. But the reporting can be very misleading.

Thanks, Ringi. Yes, that's very much the case with, for example, articles on new cancer research. I figured this forum would be a good place to go for impartial advice, given that most of the posters actually suffer from the condition and are probably a bit more BS-resistant than the average person.

If this was the BCG trial, I think this blog puts it into a bit of context without the media hype: https://blogs.diabetes.org.uk/?p=10671
Although the trial was small, it is interesting that it was not aimed at people who still have lots of beta cells which is usually the case as @ringi suggests.

Thanks for that, Helen. It certainly puts the 'trial' into perspective. But still, as you say, it's an interesting approach and possibly one to watch out for later. I should have known that the headline-writers can't resist trumpeting every new little thing that comes along. To be fair, that's their job - still a bit deflating for the rest of us, though.
