Hi there, my partner was dianogised with type 2 diabeties last year and has charcot foot. He already has had a middle toe amputated and after experiencing a knock on his ankle he developed celluitis. ~After 4 weeks off work he has now experiencing lack of cirulation in his toes and has to visit hospital tomorrow to find out if the anti-biotics are travelling to the toes and if a further toe might require amputation. unfortunatley his job only pays 4 weeks full pay and he is now on half pay for weeks and then SSP kicks in, i'm worried about his foot but also how we are going to manage financially. his life insurance needs updated to take account of his condition and i don't know where to start. I have also noticed his leg muscles are starting to waste away and he says he cannot exercise, but there must be some exercises he can do? Any advice from anyone would be appreciated.

Can you tell us what your husband's blood sugar levels are.....throughout the day.

Charcot foot is aggravated by high Bg levels, so therefore that needs to be addressed in the first instance.

As for Life Assurance usually you would be covered unless the policy wording says otherwise. You need to contact your Insurers to find out the position.

A simple method of exercise is resistance bands which can be used whilst sitting or standing and are an excellent low impact way of exercising. That should improve things. A good physio can also give advice regarding the correct type of things to do. You could ask for a referral on the NHS.

Hi there, since my last (and first) visit to the fourm, he has now has a further two toes amputated. His blood sugar levels have been very high and on average 15 per reading, I have since discovered he has only been on half the metaformin that he should be on and now the readings are coming down the best has been 8.6, at last we're heading in the right direction. thankyou for the advice re the life insurance and I will chase up the physio idea. He is due to go back to the Hospital on Tues for his 1st review and is going to ask about the possibilty of flying on 5 th March, its my 50th birthday and we have had a trip to Mexico booked for the last year. I'm concerned about the length of the flight and also given his recent surgery I can't find anyone to insure him with. any ideas? :?

Try some of these mentioned on our Community pages :

It's good that his levels are coming down with increased Metformin, but they are still high. Although he is not a new diabetic I will post our basic info for new diabetics which may be of some help in getting his levels down a bit further by watching what he is eating. Getting the levels down will also help healing to take place and can help alleviate some other symptoms as well.
