After 30 years insulin dependent I am now having problems with my foot; started with a small break in the skin and then infection, treat and responded well to antibiotics. Then after three weeks my ankle was swollen and painful, went to Limb Salvage Clinic and given an airwalker, I did not wear this for the first week as unsure of the diagnosis and significance and was unable to drive so thought I would carry on without. Went to the clinic a week later, still pain and swelling in the ankle. Seen by podiatry, and diabetic Dr, who mentioned Charkot and said it was important to wear the airwalker at all times. When asked about a definite diagnosis was told this would be MRI scan (no plans as yet to arrange this). I have to wear this airwalker now all the time and it is unsure how long for? Can anyone else advice me or give me more information on the Charkot foot and how to diagnosis etc. As I am only 48 and well controlled I would like more information as it is restricting me with work/driving etc.

Hi

I've had charcot since 11 th dec 13. Been in air cast and pot cast since then. Pot cast only on a week at a time as get ulcers. My started as a swollen bruised ankle. Went to podiatry and there was 5 degree difference in temp between right and left foot. Told to keep weight off even in boot or cast so on crutches. It's a pain but timescales vary. Have a look on Facebook as a good support group there with more info than via google. Keep positive. Richard
