Hi Saffy again ......what cheeses can you have and is it any nuts?
thank you for the mash recipe....sounds good...boy this site has got me so excited....just reading the messages has built up my confidence that i can help myself....ty ...Saffy:)

I usually eat cheese as part of a meal.I love wensleydale and cranberry and toasted cheese Mmmmmm.I also eat a lot of nuts as an alternative to sweets and snacks.Of course there are a lot of calories in cheese and nuts but the nuts contain 'good' oils.

Hi Sue....thank you for that.....ive always been a sweettooth person ..so i suffer lol....my daughters a savoury tooth..[:(!]

Saffy:)

Hi Saffy,

Pretty much any cheese and any nuts except peanuts. Peanuts are actually a member of the pea family and quite high in carbohydrate. Walnuts are supposed to be particularly good because they contain a high amount of omega-3 oil, which increases HDL (the good cholesterol) and reduces LDL (the bad cholesterol).

I've yet to discover a cheese I don't like. I used to think it was a little odd that people chose cheese rather than something sweet at the end of a meal, but these days I'm firmly in that camp.

Have you tried Manchego? It's a wonderful Spanish cheese which you should look out for. Oddly, I find cheese can raise my blood sugar quite a bit if I have a little too much. I thought the %age of fat might prevent that, but life's full of little surprises, isn't it?

As for the nuts, careful with the peanuts and cashews. Macadamias are the ultimate nut in my book. Bit pricey though.

All the best,

fergusc

Hi Fergus,

I'm with you on Manchego. I don't normally like goats cheese - I find it a bit sickly, but Manchego is made from sheep's milk and tastes more like a softer hard cheese (if that makes sense).

My favourite is Morbier. It smells very strong - you would need to double wrap it in the fridge - but has a very rich and not particularly strong flavour.

Thanks for all your messages....ive bought some macadamia nuts ...yes they are pricy..but with not buying naughty foods it works out fine....now had a shock to-day....my bg was 8.4 before breakfast which is still brill compared to what they have been last 9 months ...i had two weetabix for breakfast...two hours later..shock horror...15.6....so weetabix out for me...feel disapointed now...salad for lunch...saffy

Saffy,

Or altenatively don't have cereal for breakfast. All cereals are very high carbohydrate, weetabix being one of the highest at 40+g carb per serving. Instead try two boiled eggs with a slice of wholemeal bread or toast - 15g carb, so less than half your cereal breakfast and, being a protein, should last you through to lunchtime without feeling the need for a snack.

Hi Saffy, I don't know anything about you but, assuming you're on insulin injections, just up the dose? The key is to keep a food diary and eat the same things for at least until you know how much insulin to take to keep your levels reasonably ok - it's not exact but it should help.
As to cheese, anyone know why it raises my blood glucose? I normally have turkey salad sandwiches for lunch and take, say, 3 units but if I substitute cheese in instead then I need to take 4 or sometimes 5 units?
Cheers, Rick.

Isn't it the lactose from the milk that does that?

'Normally, when lactose reaches the digestive system, the lactase enzyme breaks it down into glucose and galactose. The liver then changes the galactose into glucose, which enters the bloodstream and raises the person’s blood glucose level.'
