Hi I'm a 42 yr old type 2 4x 500mg metformin a day. I'm on trying to get to grips with LCHF, the main thing that worries me is how much cheese i'm eating at the minute (Lidl roll toasted with melted cheese mmm), any advice or thoughts on this please, mainly worried about effects on Cholesterol and Blood Pressure.

Hi Kevkevkev, welcome to the forum, ist i will ask @daisy1 to provide you with the info for new posters, as cheese is mostly fat it is ok for diabetics to eat,but i would say if you need to lose weight....not too much, clive

I'm happy with my weight as it is. It's the high salt content that worries me slightly.

if you're worried then eat it in moderation.
if not then i don't see why u cant just snack on it it has 0 carbs ~.~

Just how much cheese are you actually eating? A piece of toasted cheese is nothing to be concerned over. If you go onto an LCHF diet then you are likely to lose more fluids, and therefore more salt, etc, which need to be replaced so unless you also include a lot of processed rather than fresh food in your diet, and/or cover you food with added salt, you shouldn't need to worry about the amount in a piece of cheese. But if it really worries you, choose a different variety as some cheeses are more salty than others.

PS And you are actually more likely to see an eventual reduction in cholesterol rather than an increase. Just watch the types of fat you're eating.

I would say at the min I am probably eating 3 or 4 lots of toasted cheese a day.... too much?

Hi @kevkevkev, as you are on LCHF you may be aware of what happens if you eat too much protein so just add the amount of protein in the cheese to your total daily amount. You only need roughly 80g of protein per day.
With a protein intake higher than this and limiting your carbohydrate, water stored with glycogen (carbohydrate) is released. In other words you just pee it out. Unfortunately for those trying to lose fat, it isn't stored fat that is being lost.
For salt, I guess you need about a teaspoon (5g) each day. I use powdered dulse and other types of seaweed as a salt substitute in cooking and as a condiment. Have a look at http://maraseaweed.com/ if you like or search online.

If you are trying for an LCHF diet then what else are you eating? "Salty" cheese and high protein rolls are not exactly the ideal basis for a decent low carb diet - it's just as possible to eat a poor low carb diet if you set your mind to it, as it is a poor high carb one, and neither will be particularly good for you. So have a good think about what else you may need to change as well as possible lower salt intake; you should be eating a varied and balanced mix of protein, fat, and getting your carbs mostly from green vegetables. If you don't eat meat, then have a look at the low carb vegetarian threads for ideas.

I highly recommend you read 'The art and science of low carbohydrate living' by Volek and Phinney, and the diet doctor's posts on his website. To do LCHF properly you really have to get rid of 'fat phobia' (as in dietary fat) - else I can't see it working!

One way of doing that is upping your fat and protein, lowering your carbs, and get your blood lipids tested before and after (say - for a period of a month). I did this on only moderate carbs as part of a 'Paleo30' trial, but to do that I started using coconut oil in my cooking - and felt very very very weird doing it as I too had been brought up on the dietary-fat-is-bad-for-you-and-will-kill-you myth. My blood lipids have never been better before or since (middle age at any rate!). This had not been the case when I went low-fat (and high carb) at my doctor's suggestion. (Well - here I am!)

Don't believe anyone - like me! Try it out for yourself. Test the healthy fats theory (which LCHF draws on, natch), and the low-fat theory for yourself with your own blood lipids...
