Chest infection and diabetes control.

I recently got caught by a chest infection, had to talk with an emergency doctor and got given a steroid: Prednisolone 6 x 5mg as well as Anti-biotics. The last time I had this combination i ended up in hospital with blood sugars higher then the meter could read and ++++ on Ketones. This time I have been better prepared.

I checked by bloods every 4 hours, and of course went into ketosis. Blood sugars highest reading was 22. Rather then going to hospital this time I opted to stay home but go on a zero carb diet for the time I was taking them. Of course I had a range of ketosis ++ to +++ but my blood sugar stabilized around 12.

I have had a funny diagnosis, so currently being treat as Type 2 (although I was on insulin originally). I upped my Metaphormin to 2 tablets twice a day, and I have always been on maximum glicazide.

My question is, Is there a better way of dealing with this, whats the right thing to do?

Thanks

Prednisone (steroid) is known to increase your blood sugar, even when you are doing everything right. Add illness to that and the fact that your body is trying to fight the infection, the stress can increase your blood sugar as well.

Since your blood sugar has stabilized for the time being, I would just keep an eye on it. What you are doing seems to be working. However, if it consistently creeps up despite the medications and LC diet, I would call your GP.

My guess is that your blood sugar will drop once the infection begins to dissipate and your discontinue the prednisone.

Also, if you have access to elderberry syrup, it is a known immune booster that supports the respiratory system. Take 1 tsp four times a day until you are well. Just be sure to look at the nutrition panel to avoid the addition of unnecessary sugars to make it more palatable.
