My first lot of chicks are a month old now and looking like proper chickens/fowl. They have most of their feathers and practice flying around [which always makes me jump]
Hope to put them out next week [subject to weather]in a separate run within the main run so they can get used to the full grown hens without getting bullied.

I also have 3 more born yesterday who are well and fluffy
I hope to take them to the local preschool tomorrow as I took the eggs on monday and the children were really facinated hearing the gentle pecking noises when they held them close to their ears

The children [3 -4 year olds] were so gentle and patient it was a delight to share with them

That makes 7 chicks in all which will do for now. When we know how many are hens and how many dinner I will put some more eggs under if needed.....and I want to anyway!! Cannot deal with too many hens though!!" :) :) :)

How do you cope with the foxes. It became obvious that my defences needed a serious rethink.

They sound absolutley delightful mand I bet they are very cute. I love chickens and ducks, but I have a small to medium garden and ***** cats!!! but a neighbour across the road has some fowl, but not sure what they are, the big black one was making a bit of a racket at lunchtime :eh: not sure how they get on with neighbours either side though. I just love baby animals.

Best wishes RRB

Took the day old chicks in to the preschool today so they could see that they had hatched. The adults were nearly in tears as they were SO cute!!!!!!

OH! Dear. One of the chicks decided to crow this morning. Double baddy really as have sent them out to the run despite the cold and he has rather signed his own death warrant unless anyone wants a young [very atractive] mixed breed cockerell!!!!

The 3 newest ones will be pleased because they can be upgraded to the bigger cage. So todays jobs, after birthday girl lunch for my daughter, is to clean and disinfect cages and move chickens

Hubby just phoned to say the exited chicks are having a great time scratching around in their new run

Very sad news yesterday as one of the first batch got killed. we think by a weasel. Other 3 well and happy as are the latest 3
:D

That's sad news :( when a good friend of mine had chickens, all but one got eaten by foxes!

I hate and loathe foxes. They ate one of my cats.
