I am type 1 and my husband is type 2 and we are and we are slightly concerned about our son who is 8 and currently undiagnosed with having diabetes. My main question if someone can please help me is that tonight an our after is main meal he had a chocolate ice lolly and exactly an our after this I did a blood test which was 7.7. Is this OK for a child?

Hi Sarah,
I am bumping your post up so that you get a reply. Sorry I do not have an answer.
Personally I would go by your motherly instincts. If there are symptoms and signs that you have noticed, then go and get your child checked out for peace of mind.

Catherine.

Hi Sarah
I was told years ago that a normal "non-diabetic" person's BG can rise to 8 if pushed. If you're concerned you should take your son to your GP. I don't think it's a good idea to check your son's blood if he's undiagnosed, otherwise he'll be worrying too. My 8 yr old would never allow me to do that willingly.
Re-the hereditary factor-there's no history of it in my family that I know of, there was a thread recently where a lot of people said same thing. None of us know what illness is round the corner and you'll drive yourself nuts if you keep thinking your son's got it. Easy to say, but try not to worry.

You'd be better off doing a fasting test in the morning before breakfast or a few tests to see what was going on. If you've got concerns go to your GP but I personally think what you quoted is a non diabetic after meal test. If your child were to show other symptoms like thirst, bed wetting, tiredness, losing weight you might need to look closer.

There isn't that much research on non diabetic bsl's but I test family etc and there is still a fairly broad variation, but no really high stuff. Even my sister after the gym was 3.3 but obviously not a problem in someone without diabetes. My mother hit an 11 after breakfast at the golden arches. She was concerned she might have T2 but after all the tests was told there was nothing wrong. I hang in the 5-8 range all the time whenever I've tested during the day but at a glucose tolerance test while pregnant I had a fasting bsl of 4.1.

All the best and hopefully no symptoms or problems arise.
