Child's BS level after food

I had my daughter (toddler) tested because she's been drinking more, having yeast infections and is sleeping more (yesterday she slept twice during the day for a total of 4 hours and 12 hours at night). My GP is on holiday and they refused to fit us in so I called the hospital and they checked it. She'd eaten a sandwich about 30mins-1 hour and it was 9.2. The nurse said it was quite high but went to see the doctor who said she was very healthy and told us we could go home.

My friend's sister is a nurse - and checks BS levels - and said it was probably due to her finger not being clean. She offered to check it for us. Her fasting level was normal but her post-lunch reading - fish and broccoli - had shot up to above 9 again.

Should I be concerned or is this kind of spike 'normal' for a young child? Should I call my GP today and ask to be fitted in for an appointment? My husband is telling me I'm imagining things and to forget it but I would still like confirmation about why 9+ was high, then it wasn't....

Spikes are a normal part of life for every person after eating. What's important is where the blood glucose readings are for the majority of the time.

This may provide some useful information for you:

The few symptoms you have described as your daughter presenting are part of the "classic" diabetic pre-diagnosis profile. However, it's best to not jump the gun and moreover - panic.

Your GP can perform a range of blood tests which can, almost definitely, let you know whether your daughter is diabetic. If in doubt it's best to have her checked out and explain exactly what you've said in this post to your doctor.

I'm not sure how much (if any) children's blood sugars differ to that of us adults so I cannot advise whether the 9+ levels you're talking about are normal or not.

Good luck and please let us know what happens. Try not to worry also:)

@jl25 well done for being alert. I think you'd be best placed to go to your GP and ask for a GAD and ICA test.

Given that the fasting blood glucose test was normal, that there was a spike up to 9 30 mins to an hour after a sandwich may not be a cause for concern. In the research that I've seen, 9 is at the high end of normal for a post-prandial response in a non-diabetic. At 30 mins to an hour after eating though, it is also the peak glucose concentration point.

It may be worth purchasing some Glucostix to urine test your daughter. If there is glucose in the urine, then there is more likelihood that attention would be paid as that is clearly abnormal.

Whatever you do, I think it is wise to try and get further tests done, if only to give yourself peace of mind.
