My mother was diagnosed type 2 just under two years ago. She manages her diabetes through diet and exercise and I've done as much as I can to understand and help. Mum found it very hard to control her diet and struggled to lose weight and really craves all the wrong types of food. A friend of mine (who's a real health nut!) told me about chlorella and how it can help to manage diabetes. Chlorella is a micro algae and very popular in Japan as health supplement. Since there is always a lot of talk about how the Japanese live longer and have very few problems with obesity, we decided to look into it. Mum was not very keen on the idea of eating algae so I took it upon myself to do a little digging in this area.
There's a lot of info on the web about chlorella and there are some books too. I was pretty impressed with what people say it can do, but I was skeptical. It seems however that there is a lot of research on how chlorella can help to control blood sugar levels. I found a book (that you can get free on the web) that talks a bit about this and it seems that micro-algae like chlorella contain a brilliant mixture of high density proteins and complex carbohydrates. The introduction of these proteins and complex carbs help to provide a steady stream of energy to the body without 'spiking insulin secretion'. This then helps to control cravings and dissipate intense carb cravings.
Chlorella also provides the body with magnesium, which is often missing. Appetites can calm down as a result of this and other nutrients.
So, after hearing all about my research I managed to convince Mum to try it. It comes in tablet form or in a powder. Mum really did not like the idea of drinking something dark green so she went for the tablets.
After about 3 or 4 weeks she noticed some changes. Firstly, she seemed to have lost the bloated feeling she often had. Chlorella works at cleansing and re-balancing the digestive system so this is prob why she felt less bloated. And the other thing we noticed was this thing about the cravings. They are nowhere near as bad! Cravings for sweet foods, carbs and fatty foods have all been reduced.
It's been a couple of months now since my mum has been using the chlorella and the most promising news so far is the weight loss. She was 3 and a half stone overweight and in the last 2 months she's lost almost a stone in weight. And.. her blood sugar level is down too. Before using the chlorella mum was reading anywhere between 8 and 9. After using chlorella she's down to about 5.8
So, with a technophobic mother who won't go near the computer I thought I'd post this info on chlorella as it's really helped us a lot. I've become fascinated by this mirco-algae and have continued my research and have started taking it too, with some great results in energy levels.
Does anyone else have any experience of using chlorella to help with diabetes?
