Hi
I am newly diagnosed type 2

A little confused about chocolate ...always assumed it was a huge no go
Howevever is this just due to the carb content ?

I am on w watchers snd like to use my weekly points on chocolate in the evenings

If i incorporated the carbs into my daily self imposed allowance of 110 g a day could I still have chocolate ?
Or is it the added sugar in it thats bad to have ?

Hi Pippi ,you will need to test to see if the chocolate effects your BG. I love chocolate too, so understand how you feel .

I have no way of testing ...gp told me specifically not to buy a monitor but i might do and not tell her lol

Dark chocolate tends to have less of an effect on sugars for some people.

Hi Pippi, the only way that you will know what effects your blood sugar is to test before you eat and two hours after. Have you asked your GP for a device ? If you haven't you can apply for a free on here. There are a few companies that offer free monitors. x

Thanks but she told me not to get one x

She probably told you about portion control and eating a small amount of carbs too! Lol! (Although I shouldn't!) I was diagnosed on the 28th of January this year T2.
Thee are some things you need to know.....
The strips can be extremely expensive. £25 per pack of 50 and since you might want to test 7 times a day (1st thing in a morning before food and drink - this is called your fasting blood sugar, then before food and 2 hours after) 50 are not going to go far. Therefore many GPs do not give them to T2 claiming that diabetes is progressive, the metformin will lower bs or that people who test regularly become anxious and depressed. This contradicts nICE (the govt advisors who advise doctors). You can buy something called an sd codefree blood sugar monitor from amazon and ebay. 50 strips cost £7.
Doctors get their advice from a UK Diabetes (www.diabetes.org.uk) which recommends that no food is banned, it's all about portion control and that you should have moderate carbs and eat low fat. What the doctor doesn't tell you, is that there are other options. One is something which is called low carb or low carb, high fat. Since we are told that fat is bad, this sounds worrying. Many type 2 s on this forum follow this diet. (Please read www.dietdoctor.com ) . You could also look at a low GI diet if you can't face giving up potatoes, pasta, rice and bread. Douglas99 follows this and if you ask him he'll help you.
You are entitled to have an eye test once a year - do not let your doctor fob you off. It is important and part of your entitlement. (The consultant whom I met on Friday, was furious when I told him and promptly made a referral.)
You should get your feet checked regularly too (this can be done by your GP or you could be sent to a podiatrist , which could cost a small fee depending on your doctor).
You need to also have a fasting blood test done every 3 months called an hb1ac which checks your bs averages and your cholestrol.
If you are on tablets, you are also exempt from paying for prescriptions. You fill in a form at your doctors and they send it off. 2-3 weeks later you get a card in the post which you must show to your chemist when you collect your prescriptions. You will have to pay until the card arrives but speak to the chemist- mine gave me a special receipt so I could claim the money back.
I would advise that you keep a food diary - especially if you need to lose weight. I have lost 1 stone 3lbs so far.
People on this forum are fab and you can ask whatever you like and people will try and help. Good luck with whatever you do.

Thanks
I have made appt for a retinopathy check at opticians and have a chiropodist every 6 weeks anyhow that did all the diabetes stuff last time
I keep food diary as track what i eat on wwatchers

Not on meds .. diet controlled atm

Will look into monitors x

Thank goodness! My doc was useless, I saw you were a new member and didn't want you to feel alone and fobbed off due to costs. In that case, I eat the occasional square of dark chocolate - my choice is Tescos Swiss chocolate 72% cocoa solids. Slightly less carb and carb which sugars than their higher percentage cocoa solids. I would recommend getting a bs monitor first, test eat test and see! Good luck with the weight loss. Hope it works out with the choccie and can I swap my doc for yours - lol!

Haha thanks
The dr was useless .. jus5 gave me leaflets and told me to book an appt at opticians lol

Got all my info from here and the booklets

Thanks for your help ..i appreciate it xxxx

You shouldn't have to pay - apparently they take a photo of the back of your eye and it should be done at the hospital. You could check with the diabetes clinic at your local hospital if your optician requires payment... The advice I received was take these tablets 3 times a day and lose some weight . When I asked what I should eat, I was told to look on the net!

Yes she told me to look on the7 net too lol
No . There is only one opticians here that does it ... they put drops in eys to look at the back of them ... it is free

The irony of the situation was that I followed their advice and then they didn't like it! The dn on our first meeting got angry and told me that there was no point in seeing her again as her advice to follow the NHS advocated diet wouldn't change and that she was referring me to the hospital. The doc told me to cancel the hospital referral and see him in a few weeks when I'd lost some weight. I did this and his opening gambit was "are you still on that silly diet?" He then asked me what I wanted as it was the evening surgery and he was busy! I then reminded him that he asked to see me! He told me to just carry on losing weight. I asked about the hba1c test, the eye test and the feet. He told me to get the fasting bloods done and then ring up for the results and that I didn't need the feet and eye tests as I had no complications! The consultant at the hospital had steam coming out of his ears when I told him!

Oh good lord lol

Well i will book in for an Hba1c when its due and then make an appt for the results a week later

Dr said i did not need the chiropodist but i do ha e pnd anyhow and he did diabetes check last friday x

Do Type 2s' get free chiropody like Type 1s'? I assume they would so make sure you're not paying for it.

I have to have chiropodist every 6 weeks anyhow so he does doppler/fibre optic strands etc every 3 months included in cost x

That's not great considering it's the main problem diabetics face. It should all be free, as much as you need.

Aldi do a 85% dark chocolate called Moser Roth, each pack has 5 individual bars and each one contains 4g of carbs, it's really nice and best of all it's cheaper than the well known brands.
