She probably told you about portion control and eating a small amount of carbs too! Lol! (Although I shouldn't!) I was diagnosed on the 28th of January this year T2.
Thee are some things you need to know.....
The strips can be extremely expensive. £25 per pack of 50 and since you might want to test 7 times a day (1st thing in a morning before food and drink - this is called your fasting blood sugar, then before food and 2 hours after) 50 are not going to go far. Therefore many GPs do not give them to T2 claiming that diabetes is progressive, the metformin will lower bs or that people who test regularly become anxious and depressed. This contradicts nICE (the govt advisors who advise doctors). You can buy something called an sd codefree blood sugar monitor from amazon and ebay. 50 strips cost £7.
Doctors get their advice from a UK Diabetes (
www.diabetes.org.uk) which recommends that no food is banned, it's all about portion control and that you should have moderate carbs and eat low fat. What the doctor doesn't tell you, is that there are other options. One is something which is called low carb or low carb, high fat. Since we are told that fat is bad, this sounds worrying. Many type 2 s on this forum follow this diet. (Please read
www.dietdoctor.com ) . You could also look at a low GI diet if you can't face giving up potatoes, pasta, rice and bread. Douglas99 follows this and if you ask him he'll help you.
You are entitled to have an eye test once a year - do not let your doctor fob you off. It is important and part of your entitlement. (The consultant whom I met on Friday, was furious when I told him and promptly made a referral.)
You should get your feet checked regularly too (this can be done by your GP or you could be sent to a podiatrist , which could cost a small fee depending on your doctor).
You need to also have a fasting blood test done every 3 months called an hb1ac which checks your bs averages and your cholestrol.
If you are on tablets, you are also exempt from paying for prescriptions. You fill in a form at your doctors and they send it off. 2-3 weeks later you get a card in the post which you must show to your chemist when you collect your prescriptions. You will have to pay until the card arrives but speak to the chemist- mine gave me a special receipt so I could claim the money back.
I would advise that you keep a food diary - especially if you need to lose weight. I have lost 1 stone 3lbs so far.
People on this forum are fab and you can ask whatever you like and people will try and help. Good luck with whatever you do.
