Cholesterol and insulin resistance?

I read recently you can do some calculation with some cholesterol numbers and get an indication of the level of insulin resistance. Does anybody know anything about this?
 
Trigs: HDL ratio but only in some ethnic groups as explained here. (says works for 'whites' but not other ethnicities)
