Had my visit to the doctor today 3 months post diagnosis and HBA1c down from 16.6 to 7.7. I thought he was going to put me on drugs but he didn't even suggest it. He was so pleased with what I had done that he said have a another 3 months of what you've been doing and you've cracked it (he thought the low carb was a bit Draconian but saw what it had done and didn't make any other suggestions)

My question is that my cholesterol is still a bit high could someone please explain the results to me. I have looked at the web but I am still confused !!!!!

Serum cholesterol /HDL ratio - 2.9. Down from 3.3
Serum triglycerides mmol/L - 1.34. Down from 1.39
Serum HDL cholesterol level - 2.0 Up from 1.8

Thanking you so much!

Well done with your drop in HbA1c. :D

your total cholesterol (ie serum cholesterol)is 5.8mmol/l
( calculated from the cholesterol/HDL ie x/2=2,9)
You can also calculate your LDL ('bad') cholesterol.
LDL cholesterol = Total cholesterol – HDL cholesterol – Total triglyceride/2.1: so your LDL =3.19 mmol/dl

In the UK they suggest total cholesterol should be less than 5mmol/l so yours is a bit high.
LDL cholesterol should be below 3mmol/l (but for those at risk of CVD ie all people with D, the level is often given as below 2mmol/l) Yours is a bit above the 3mmol/l.

Your HDL ('good cholesterol) was already quite high and has risen (should be above 1.2mol/l)
Your trigs are within guidelines ( should be below 1.7mmol/l)

All in all your levels are only a bit over the guidelines, how significant that is depends on your age, if you're male, blood pressure and whether you smoke or not. These factors all add to the risks.
This link gives the conventional advice (I'm sure their will be alternatives)

Heyyy..What are you doing with your health..???Try to control your colestrol level..Otherwise it will lead to many major problems..There will be problem of obesity If you'll not reduce it.. A problem of Blood sugar will also be increased... So avoid Bread, Butter,Pasta all kind of things.....They are very dangerous for your health..Try to eat some light food like grain and pulses...

Thank you for your reply and the link.

My doctor said that I could have statins if I wanted but we discussed it and he said that with more weight loss and better BG control I could reduce the cholesterol level.

He's really good and positive and although I could tell he thought the low carb regime was hard, he didn't criticise or tell me off. He was just so impresses with what I had done.

So I have another three months to reduce all levels further. Oh, and by the way, I am female, 56, non smoker with about another 11/2 to 2 stone to loose.

Thanks once again for your post.

Henry, thank you for your reply too. If you re read my post, you will see that I am already low carbing and losing weight.
Unfortunately many grains have an effect on my BG for example oats spiked me to a 2 hour post prandial of 12!
I knew the levels needed to be reduced but could not find the recommended LDL level.

Thankyou Nikkig for your question and phoenix for your answers. It's about time (after some 8 years) that I got down to understanding this subject and how the figures are calculated and related to one's condition because, until now, the figure 6%
was all that I tried to achieve. The link supplied by phoenix added to the info but was obviously not for the low carbers in other respects. I will now supplant my figures for the past few testing sessions for those of Nikkig and see how well, or otherwise, I
have performed using the formulae kindly supplied by phoenix.

I have an overall 4.8% cholesterol (on statins) but my HDL is too low

How do you raise HDL levels?
