Hi, My husband has just been for a renewal of his prescription, while on business in Aus, and the doctor has prescribed him Cholesterol Tablets and half an aspirin tablet a day. No other doctor has ever suggested cholesterol tablets before. Can anyone tell me if this is common practice anywhere else? Thanks.

Seven million people are prescribed them in the UK and the rest of the world also give them away like sweets.

I assume you mean cholesterol reduction tablet AKA statins.
There seems to be a move towards statinization of diabetics. Whether or not statins are a good idea depends on what the cholesterol levels are (HDL, LDL, Triglycerides) and whether there are any side effects manifesting themselves

Hello den b, while your husband was away did he have any tests done in Aus, the doctor must have had a reason to prescribe these tablets. Iam not aware of this as normal, but more questions to hubby are needed, ttfn

Not only diabetics. A risk assessment is done to determine if you have more than a 20% chance of CVD within the next ten years. There are approximately three million diabetics in the UK but seven million on statins. NICE have draft recommendations to reduce the risk assessment level to a 10% chance. This will put a further five million on statins.

Much would depend on his cholesterol results, previous medical history and the prescribing Dr's risk assessment of him having a heart attack or stroke , if he's returning home soon he could wait until he see's his regular gp before deciding to take the meds.

Thanks all for replies. He has not taken any of the medications and will speak to GP when he gets home. His cholesterol levels are fine and the doctor did not do any blood tests at all. I just thought it was all very odd as nobody had ever suggested he needed them before.

That sounds like a very stupid doctor to me. I could understand if he had a blood test and his cholesterol was raised, but NO BLOOD TEST? Crazy.

My endro wont's me on cholesterol lowering drugs, but we can't find anything that I can actually take (depsit being a strict vegetarian) that I'm not allergic to or sensitive towards, even the extra dosage of Niacen I can't tolerate without nasty side effects.
