The reason that high hba1c causes CVD is because it causes microaneurysms (like what the optician tries to find at retinopathy screening, except all over the body), which then heal with a kind of internal scab, which can break off and cause blockages and heart attacks.

Well that's good news about your trigs, if you've just recently changed your diet and taken to exercise then you could wait a few months and see if your cholesterol levels change, there's some good advice on The British Heart Foundation website on reducing cholesterol levels.
