Re: cholestrol

youre on the right track Stuart. That with so moderate cardio and plenty of water will have you down in no time.

I am 42 and had similar readings to yours last Sept. I had my lipids tested again last week and now i am
Total Cholesterol : Below 4mmol
HDL : Over 2.1mmol
LDL : Below 2mmol
Triglycerides : Below 1.3mmol

I think water might be the key as i drink very little!! And I mean little :? some days I dont have any!!

Im back to 3 times a week in the gym, only running thou as its the only thing I enjoy believe or not

The reason that I ask is because having a high HbA1c is more risky than having a high cholesterol value in terms of cardiovascular disease.

Take a look at this plot, it shows how much HbA1c affects CVD risk.

Whoa, that is SCARY! my hba1c was 8 when I was diagnosed - that's more than seven times the risk! Wow.

It is, isn't it? Don't forget though, that ">7" bar is everyone over 7 including people in the teens. The reason that high hba1c causes CVD is because it causes microaneurysms (like what the optician tries to find at retinopathy screening, except all over the body), which then heal with a kind of internal scab, which can break off and cause blockages and heart attacks.

She did say what my trigs were but I forgot!! But I do remember her saying it was normal??

Its annoying that I succesfully control my diabetes with excercise and diet and my cholestrol is slightly out!!! :?

Well that's good news about your trigs, if you've just recently changed your diet and taken to exercise then you could wait a few months and see if your cholesterol levels change, there's some good advice on The British Heart Foundation website on reducing cholesterol levels.

Good luck!

Yes, I suppose if it includes over 7 then hopefully I won't be in that group for long. I was 8.0 on the test that diagnosed me, and on a repeat test seven days after I found out and had cut carbs down to 100g it was 7.5. So if seven days of only moderately low carbing already bought it down then I'm hoping to see a better drop at my 3 month repeat.

If you think about it, they'd have to wait a long time to see what affect hba1c has on CVD/CHD. so I think its if the hba1c is chronically at those levels.

Ive been exercising for a while. I run about 5 miles twice a week on a tread mill!! My diet changed in sept 12 to low carb, bearing in mind I had already lost 6+ stone (22 stone to 16'4 today) and my last hbA1c was 4.5 at last test in oct :-), never been above 5 since finding out 5 years ago..

That is a phenomenally good hba1c! That puts you in the same risk category as non-diabetics, so perhaps you don't need to follow the stricter cholesterol targets. I'm sure your doc will advise you.

Thanks! Thing is, if i followed my doctors/nurse advise i would be on metformin and statins!!! I know I can change things with research and talking to people like yourself who have experience. My diabetic nurse is not a fan of lchf but it works for me and im sticking with! Never felt more alive than I do now and im 44.

My main aim now is sub 4.0. and getting my LDL down :-) I do everything right(I do fall of the wagon occasionally) but like I said before, I dont drink water, which is bizzare!!! But I do now :-)

Well that's a remarkable achievement Stuart, well done and keep it up

a couple of months ago my GP said I should go on statins because my cholesterol was 6. I decided not to and to try bring my cholesterol down on my own.
I have a benecol poured over 50grams of muesli for breakfast (works out to about 35grams of carb). Started doing an extra 12 mins of cardio on top of my weight training 5 times a week. I also started eating brown rice and raw baby spinach. Just those small changes.... my choleterol is now 4
