Hi, I need info on cholesterol, fats and statins.
My cholesterol is 5.6, tri 1.2. It's not the most recent test but I should be able to get hold of that. It has been pretty stable at this level for some time now (over a year at least). I am hoping that I can get them down with increased activity now that other health issues have been resolved, namely getting my gall bladder removed!
My consultant would like me to take statins...I would prefer not to because I really don't want to take extra meds if I can avoid them. I work hard at getting a good, balanced diet and cooking from scratch 99% of the time.
In the past I have read stuff about various fats and what was once thought of as bad is now good. I also have read stuff about statins and side effects etc.
I am just feeling overwhelmed by the info and my diabetes (28 yrs T1) at the moment...and I have just had news that I have background retinopathy which has really shaken me and left me feeling vulnerable.
Is is reasonable to expect some kind of eye changes after 28 relatively good years with diabetes? or is it because of my cholesterol? any suggestions, insights and links to good info about fats etc will be appreciated

well trigs of 1.2 are ok could be improved by reducing your carb intake. What is your HDL value because without that we cannot say if you cholesterol make up is fine. The best ratio is trig/HDL - I posted a link to prof Ken Sikaris video talking about the latest understanding; do a search for it.

Thx Andrew. On the printout that I have it doesn't show HDL value. The trigs are within the range at 1.2 (0.1 - 1.8). I'll contact my diabetes clinic for the most up to date results and a better breakdown on Monday.
I'll check out the video too. All info is good while I get my head around this :)
