Cholesterol.

So I bought the book The Great Cholesterol Con. Had a little read through. Can't say I agreed with alot of what he said. He mentioned FH. I couldn't understand what he was saying about it, but he did say something about 5 year olds dying from chd. Well this alarmed me.

My uncle at 51 had a heart attack. Slim, healthy.... and was told it was due to a problem with his liver and cholesterol and to get his family all tested. I've spoken to my auntie and asked was it fh he was diagnosed with, it was 11 years ago so she's not sure now but it was something to do with his liver?

So my aunties, my mum and cousins all got their cholesterol tested and all had high cholesterol and ended up on statins. My cousin was about 14 at the time when she was given statins. I'm 36, slim and my cholesterol wad 6.9 in December. It was a non fasting sample, I'd just eaten. My LDL was 3.9, hdl 1.6 and triglycerides 3. My gp wasn't concerned at my age and said my risk was less than 1%.

Now I'm worried if I have FH and if I do can my children die without me knowing? My friend lost her daughter to chd last week, she was 12 and it's made me so upset. I guess I'm now worried about my cholesterol and my chikdrens risk.

I spoke to my gp about my uncle and he just said he will test me annually. Didn't seem concerned.

I'm really concerned can anyone advise? This and my hba1c being high is making me very worried. My hba1c was 40 in December. My gp wasn't concerned at all but I am as I eat well and am slim. No family history.

Thank you.

Julie

FH is a dominantly inherited disease meaning that only one copy of the gene needs to be inherited for someone to show signs of the disease. As we have 2 sets of genes (one set from each parent), someone with FH could have one FH gene and one normal gene for cholesterol. That would give them a 50:50 chance of passing the FH gene on every time they had a child.

In FH, LDL is 4.9 mmol/l or higher whereas your LDL levels fall into the normal range. This would suggest that if your mother did have FH, you were lucky and did not inherit the FH gene from your mother and therefore cannot pass it on to your children. Your GP is right to repeat the test to be sure and, of course, there are other causes of raised cholesterol.

Thank you that's really reassured me. He said my LDL was 3.9 so only slightly raised. I'm not being tested for FH but nor have my mum or sisters they just have cholesterol testing like I do. I hope this is ok.

You've really helped.

Thank you.

Thank you.

I've tied 2 Gps anxiety both said I had nothing to worry about with a high thyroid result. High cholesterol and high end of moral hba1c. I've been made to feel like a hypochondriac lol!

All this is obviously stressing you out Julie, try going back to your gp and discuss things or ask to speak with another Dr in the practice who may specialise in CVD, alternatively you could contact the charity Heart UK, here are their contact details:

Good luck.
