Hi everyone got my in a right-old muddle! saw a diabetic doctor in february who put me on insulin (been a diabetic for 11yrs) and said my cholestral was high at 4.8 and asked my gp that when my glucose levels went from 8 to below 7 to retest cholestral, I've had two reviews since then and my cholestral has jumped higher everytime and i now 5.2. My gp doesnt seem to mind this. I'm quite worried about ischaemia as my mother died at 57 yrs old with this i have a valve problem too. I've tried looking at my diet again and again but still rising cholestral. In my family there is a disease of cholestralaemia(sorry if i spelt it wrong). I'm hoping that cholestral will come down. Not on medication for this. x

Hi marmalade

Were you only told your total cholesterol count or were you given separate figures for HDL. LDL and triglycerides? HDL is good cholesterol and you want this reacing to be as high as possible. LDL and triglycerides are the ones that have to be kept in check. For diabetics LDL should be less than 3.9.

Hi marmalade,

I too have a family history of high cholesterol.
I do not take statins because of the side effects that I suffered. I have found that eating cholesterol decreasing foods worked for me and include a list here. You will obviously have to test your blood sugar response to them.

....Whole grains and oats.
....Blueberries.
....Pistachios, walnuts, almonds. ( Too many will increase weight).
....Avacados.
....Olive oil.
....Oily fish.
....Benecol/Flora products.
....Beans. (soya beans, butter beans, kidney beans, etc...)

Hope this helps.

Catherine.

Hi everyone.

My bad cholestral is 5.2 but my good cholestral is bad. I suffer hypos on exercise and have a mitral valve regurgitation and mitral valve prolapse. I've asked for help with exercise to learn to deal with hypos when I exercise but so far nothing. Im not overweight so docs not concerned. It could be that because of other health problems (benign brain demyelination) the health outweighs the benefits. thanks to everyone who has replied I will check out everything properly the next time i have tests done and will check out the foods. cant have nuts because my daughter has a severe peanut allergy and is autistic we dont have them in the house. cheers :D :D
