Hi, I found out that I was LADA a few weeks ago. I had been misdiagnosed as Type 2 in 2020 but really is was latent Type 1. For almost two years I’d successfully controlled diabetes with a low carb diet and over the last couple of months all control was lost. I eventually was admitted to hospital and now have insulin and am gradually learning how to balance it.

Losing control of diabetes also coincided with the start of hives. It is getting worse and otc remedies haven’t worked and so far not huge success with antihistamines prescribed either. It is primarily delayed contact hives. If I wear a rucksack I may get red welts where the straps were a few hours later. It is getting worse, today I have bought new shoes as I have hives on the top of my feet and ankles. I also have Hashimotos. My GP is reluctant to prescribe oral steroids as these can cause problems with diabetes.

If anyone has a similar experience and can advise what helps for them please let me know. My GP cannot help me and the wait to see a dermatologist is long indeed. Thanks

Hi @Bex72, this is something I have issues with too. It's miserable isn't it?
It's not something I have seen my GP about but mentioned it when I was seeing my dermatologist for something else, but it has come back several times since (at that time it had been ongoing for several months).
I'm already prescribed high-potency topical steroid ointment for something else (prescribed by them) and the dermatologist said I should use that on the hives for a week. I have used lower potency steroid ointment (prescribed for another thing, by my GP) on other occasions and that helps clear it up.
I'm not sure what the best potency steroid is since I'm not a GP/medical professional, but it might be worth asking your GP for some steroid ointment to try.

Thanks sleepster. I did ask my gp about steroid cream and he said no. Hmmmn. I’ve had eczema in the past and have plenty of relatives with it. It won’t do any harm to try a low potency cream. It is an absolute pain isn’t it. I want to able to wear my training and walking boots so my feet and ankles need to be good. I bought a bum bag to store my diabetic kit in and ended up with welts around my body after wearing it. It really is a nuisance. Thanks again and all the best to you. X
