Hello all :) Ive done ALOT of readings on these closed loop pumps currently under dev. What do you know about these pumps, and do you believe we will have such a device before we hit 2020? I know medtronic work hard on developing these, but I dont think they will be first out. There are several other companies which also does alot of research on such a device. Boston University has some great work going on, check the page under. And the trials are going very well. http://sites.bu.edu/bionicpancreas/ I see these problems developing this device - We inject our insulin subcutant, takes 15min + to absorb, while a non-diabetic person gets the insulin directly into the blood stream. BUT NovoNordisk will release theire new Ultra Rapid Insulin by the end of 2015 or earlie 2016. They are just waiting for final approval. This will not instantly gets absorbed, but alot quicker than currently Rapid acting insulin. It will also be gone completley in 1-2 hours. - A fully functional Closed Loop pump needs glucagon. Current glucagon must be mixed and only last for a short period. BUT again there are a company named Xeris " http://www.xerispharma.com/ " which has made it possible to have a premixed glucagon which can last up to over a year! They are also adding this to pens so we can use them in small doses if we get low! Fantastic if you have nausea! :) Expected to end trial and get approval in 2017. - The CGM needs to be more precise and be able to update the BG quicker than current 5min lagg which example Dexcom has. Tho I know that they are working on a algorithm which will make it possible to decrease this lagg! - The pump needs to do things right if one of the components are failing, meaning not overdosing and so on! Other things: - What about excercise - Can the Closed Loop pump adapt to different persons??? I suggest people donate money to http://sites.bu.edu/bionicpancreas/donate/ so we can get this device out on the market in a few years! Edward Damiano think its possible within 2017. I doubt that, BUT we can hope that it may be on the market by 2020! Giving them another 3 years :) -Thomas :)
