Looking for advice, i drink alcohol and follow the advice of my diabetic consulant to NOT take insulin for it as alcohol lowers your blood sugars. However i have never tried a cocktail! I am going on holiday soon and want to try cocktails but dont know how to treat them with my diabetes, i am type one diabetic. Has anyone had cocktails with type one diabetes?

Yes, I LOVE cocktails! What I do is look through the menu and go for something with the least carbs. So I try to avoid ones with sugar syrup, full sugar coke, sugary fruit juices, etc.

If I do have one with a reasonable amount of juice in, I sometimes have, say, one unit of insulin to cover that, or even half a unit.

I've never gone high from cocktails. I wonder if the spirits in them help cancel out the juice : D

Obviously I test afterwards to make sure my sugars are ok, but I've drunk 3 in a row and had no problem. In fact with one of them that was strong and low carb I've even eaten a few crisps to keep my BS up.

Thanks! What are your favourite cocktails for me to try?

I like lots of different ones and it depends how the place makes them, but I like Singapore Slings, strawberry daiquiris, Manhattans, Margaritas, Tequila Sunrises, mojitos, Brandy Alexanders.....er, the list goes on!

Told you I liked them : D The only thing to say is don't rely on just the names of ones you've had before as some places seem to add extra coke or lemonade to traditional cocktails, so you're not getting what you expected. I almost got caught out like this once.

Thanks!

I am a type 2 and find a aperitif Aperol Spritz has very little effect on my blood glucose numbers.
Aperol Spritz. = 2 part Aperol, 3 part Prosecco, 1 part Soda Water. + ice.

You can alter the proportions to change the alcohol content, don't too much ice.
