I'm assuming you're taking it because of the effects fish oil has on joint health. If i remember correctly cod oil is high in vitamin A and even close to the maximum recommended IU with a single teaspoon. Since vitamin A can cause toxicity in high numbers and can even be dangerous for pregnant females i would assume that's why it get's some bad press. This said there are hundreds of gel capsules with fish oil which is basically omega 3 fatty acids (both EPA and DHA) that will have some effect on joint health. Though it wont reverse bone spurs and don't know if it will offer much relief.

It's also important to note that the ratio of omega 3 and omega 6 is important, a 1:1 ratio is ideal and sometimes hard to achieve. But taking a fish oil gel capsule on a daily basis will not cause any adverse effects as long as you stay within the RDA. For the RDA you need to look at the omega 3 fatty acids and the ratio of the EPA and DHA not just the fish oil. Read the label and look closely at the information given it should say the amount of fish oil, amount of omega 3 fatty acids and preferable the amount of EPA and DHA. I think the general RDA is around 1000-1200 mg for adults on the omega 3 front since that roughly equates to the RDA of EPA and DHA. But as always when you feel any adverse effects stop taking them.

A good label should look something like this:

Also look at the serving size, some might be cheaper but you'll need to take 2 caps for the same amount.

Hi @caretaker

I've taken a CLO supplement for around 24 years, initially took it in capsule form but over the last 5 years have switched to CLO liquid, the one I buy is Seven Seas High Strength and take 10ml each day.

The reason why I started to taking CLO was because a Orthopedic surgeon told me I'd likely get arthritis in my ankle after a really bad break that didn't heal correctly, the surgeon wanted to reset the bones but I declined, he was a firm believer in the benefits of CLO and took the supplement himself so I decided to give it a go and to this day I don't have arthritis in the joint.

However I can't say for definite it's down to CLO and perhaps if I never took the supplement I still wouldn't have developed arthritis in the joint, but just the same I continue to take it and probably always will. On a side-note I do have very good cholesterol levels and I've read that CLO can help control cholesterol........particularly triglycerides.

I remember my father bringing a plurry big jar of Cod Liver Oil capsules home from work when I was a kid. Filthy things to swallow and I did my best not have to take them.

Our spaniel dog liked them though, and he had a nice glossy coat after a while.

I have a stash of tins of mackerel and sardines in my desk drawer at work for emergency snacking purposes. They're not popular with my colleagues, but I don't really care. Omega 3s, protein, calcium, yum.
