Another question with regard to gluten free products and products that may have been handled with gluten wheat etc.

If James does not show any symptoms of products handled with gluten etc can I be sure that he is not being affected by it. The reason for this is although his blood tests show he is on a strict gluten free diet and his consultant is very pleased with his results, I am concerned that he is not filling out as a teenager like his peers. He is growing taller and is gaining weight albeit minimal I wonder if he is not getting the full nutrients from food because he does have food which has been handled with gluten with no ill effects.

When I mention to his Diabetic Consultant (his coeliac consultant is only once a year and now has changed to the adult section) that I wish he had a bit more "meat" on him, his reply is always. No he is fine as he is, Keep him Lean.

He is 16, 17 in April and has not reached 9 stone yet. He is 5ft 9ins tall. He does not really stand out as being thin, but does when he is around his mates.

Any help would be appreciated

Hi Stoney I can only comment from an outsider as family members have coeliacs and both react differently to wheat and gluetin. My brother regular cheats on the diet but isn't always affected, where as my mum can't have anything that is even handled in a factory containing wheat/gluetin.
Can't help with the weight gain, hope you get the answer's your after.

Did he have any vitamin/mineral deficiencies at diagnosis (due to malabsorption)? For example they only investigated me for coeliac because I was anaemic and not responding to iron supplements. They subsequently found other vitamin deficiencies and I gained about 10 kilos very quickly after going gluten-free... I had become very underweight from malnutrition

So I would guess if his antibodies are OK and he has no other vitamin/mineral deficiencies then his villi must be working.

Thanks for replies. No other deficiencies at the time so I guess the villi is working
