Hi All

Been having some higher rouge readings just of late
Does black instant coffee have an effect on our BS levels??

Some people do report that coffee has an effect on their bg levels, try switching to decaff coffee & tea.

If you do a quick forum search you will a few threads on this topic.

I find that my sugars do increase with caffeine intake, from what i have been able to find out - In some people caffeine can impair insulin absorbtion and thus if you have caffeine/coffee around meals it can impair your basal and bolus from acting properly and the meal time carbs can make your sugars rise a bit or a lot depending on who you are.

Because of this i try to avoid coffee to close to my meals, same thing with energy drinks.

I also find that when the caffeine wears off my BS drops quicker then if i hadn't drank the coffee, so keep an eye on that as well.

I Drink a good amount of Caffine, No Effect that i can tell.

I haven't noticed any effect from Coffee, but maybe there is and I just don't relate it to that.

Yeah I dunno..

I can wake up in the morning and check my sugars, see them at 5.5mmol/l then skip breakfast and only have a black coffee at work, and then about an hour later check again and see my sugars at 6.5mmol/l..

Its happened a couple times, with multiple brands of coffee, all black, all in the morning after not eating or bolusing for like 8 hours..

I found some stuff online, so i just assumed, but again, everyone is different.

Diamattic.
I may be because you are not eating breakfast and your liver thinks you are starving and dumping glucose.

That could have been the liver if breakfast is skipped, bodies own energy supply at work.

Don't forget to factor in "Morning" or "Dawn" syndrome. This is when your body naturally pumps glucose into your system to get you up and going. It's a natural reaction to the body sensing that it is time to get up. Everybody does it to some extent but in most people their pancreas will deal with it. I inject 8-10 units of Novorapid every morning to deal with this and my levels remain good.
This can also happen when you're ill and your liver tries to "help" by giving you more glucose.
Also if you have a mild hypo during sleep, your body can often deal with it by using glucose reserves in the liver to raise it back up but then go too high. I'm not sure if caffeine itself affects levels - I was always told that it doesn't and I drink loads of tea, but it's black and obviously milk and sugar will have an effect.
