Cold weather

Hi there,

Just trying to work out whether my honeymoon period has ended or if my recent very high levels are down to this really cold snap we are having. Ever since the temperature dropped about a week/week and a half ago, my levels have gone mad. Can the cold have such an impact? This is my first winter with Type 1 Diabetes. I have increased my Lantus by about 30% to bring down my fasting readings and need about double my usual Novorapid dose with meals. Just wondering if anyone in UK is experiencing the same this cold winter.

Thanks! :)

I work out side, so recently been working in temps of -4 degrees... And yes this did have a impact on my BG's.. Hot whether can make a difference as well

In cold whether the body tends to shiver to try to produce heat, which of cause uses energy so this will burn glucose in the blood quicker... The degree this will effet some-one will be individual.

Spending best part of 8 hours in the cold, I find the morning where the phsyical side of my job keeps me warm not much change but after dinner when my job to a certain extent isn't so physical and so feel the cold side of things a lot more I tend to have more trouble and a higher risk of hypo...

It well may be that you have finished your honeymoon period if before the cold whether you were already making adjustments to you insulin, it would be best at the moment to monitor well, So that you keep the best control and be watchfull for any changes that might indicate that any adjustment to basal doseage that you've made might need readjusting when the cold whether has passed..
