I made a decision to come off Gliclazide a couple of weeks ago. My fasting count has gone up which I expected. What is bother me is how long it takes for the the Pancreas to recover front the effects of taking Gliclazide. I understand that the Pancreas will recover but, was just looking for a time-line?

Re: Coming off Glicacide

Sorry, I don't know the answer to your question.

I'm considering coming off Gliclazide as I feel that it is keeping me from loosing weight. I would like to exchange it for Sitagliptin (Januvia) as this works in a different way.

I wouldn't like the rise in BS levels coming off it.

That's interesting as I was thinking of returning to Gliclazide as an alternative to my short acting insulin (Novorapid). I assumed, probably wrongly, that Gliclazide was short acting.

Gliclazide has a tendency for weight gain. The way it works is that it makes your pancreas produce more of its own insulin. Some schools of thought are that this can wear out your poor impaired pancreas more quickly, which is why I suspect the OP has stopped taking it.

Sitagliptin (Januavia) doesn't work this way - this is an explanation of how it works http://www.diabetesuffolk.com/Drugs/Sitagliptin.htm and this is an explanation of how Gliclazide works http://www.diabetesuffolk.com/Drugs/Gli ... pizide.htm

This is the reason why I'd like to change, but when I mentioned it to my GP, his response was that I should give up the Gliclazide alltogether, but I'm not prepared to let my BS go higher, so will stay on the Gliclazide for the time being.
