coming off metformin

Hi, not been here for a long time because i forgot my username, and altho i could find a bit for if you had forgotten your password i couldnt find one for user name. Ok, I was diagnosed type 2 diabetic last march and was put on gliclazide and metformin, later i was taken off gliclazide and told to take 2 metformin a day, but i couldnt stomach two i was having megga tummy cramps, I perservered with taking one a day even tho i had continual tummy pains for the whole twelve months, well it came to a head a fortnite ago when i went to bed with slight tummy pain but woke up next morning in agony and my daughter took me to accident and emergency, they gave me morphine and kept me in overnite, they thought it was gallstones, however i had a scan which showed no gall stone. On coming out of hospital i just felt i could not cope any longer with all these bad tummys so decided to stop taking my metformin, have been off them now for 2 weeks and not had ONE bad tummy, the first time in 12 months. I went to a drop in clinic to explain what i had done and why and the doctor said he could prescribe gliclazide, however i dont want to take them because to be honest i am having more problems with my sugar going low and me going all shakey than i am it going high, so i asked if i could give it a go first by diet only. Do you think i have done the right thing ? If not do you have any suggestions ? thank you.

Hi Granny and Graham, i have just managed to get a post on, another topic, about how slow its been on here tonight , hope admin can sort it soon

Granny if you have/need to take meta whats it ,huh i believe there is a slow release one, that supposed to be better

Hi Granny
I'm a granny too
If you really can't manage Metformin, have you tried the slow release ones? They are gentler on the stomach.
Otherwise
If you can manage by diet alone, it's worth a try. You will need to contro your carbs, so make some meal plans. And exercise helps.
