This weekend I made myself an apple cake from Jamie's Italy with apples from my garden. This should have been nothing but a pleasant experience but has caused nothing but a diabetes disaster.

Last night I had my evening meal quite late, which I know is bad, but there we are. I had spaghetti bolognaise for and the apple cake about half an hour later, with a dollop of creme fraiche and some blueberries.

About an hour after I stopped eating I noticed the Libre said it was trending down and was at about 10. I left it for a while and did some other stuff. Then, before bed it had gone up again and was at 14.5. I gave three units and went to bed, hoping for the best. Then, at about 2 or 3am it was back up to 13.6 so I gave two units. Then, when I woke up at 7 it was 12.2, so it had been high the entire night.

My basal is correct because I've been giving that amount for ages and it's normally been fine. It's just crazy I can't enjoy something as normal as a home-made apple cake. I guess I could eat earlier to try and capture any problems long before bed time.

Hi,

Interestingly, I can eat late after a gig. (1 or 2 am.) The only time I do pizza. Bolus up front then do a late basal. (Lantus.) With no issue.
There are a few shots of vodka too.
Any other time? Forget it.

Okay, so it sounds like you've found a particular routine that just works for that situation only? I don't see the benefit of a late basal. I just try and keep them consistently twelve hours apart.

Have you made this cake before, so are confident of the carb count?

If your blood sugars have remained high today, I'd also suggest starting a new pen, in case your insulin has 'gone off'.

Yes and I worked out it's about 42g of carbohydrate per slice (if you cut the cake into eight slices) and that's how I was accounting for it.

Anyway, I had another slice of the apple cake this evening after I got back from Korfball (two hours of mainly high-intensity sport).

I got home, did a scan and it was 9.1. Then I did an injection, put the apple cake in the oven and had a shower. After eating it, my BG went down to 5.8 and is now 7.1. Wish me luck!
