Complications?

I just have been pondering here... If we for a moment talk about diabetic complications. I assume that maintaining non-diabetic bg readings is the best guarantee for not developing complications? I also assume that balanced nutrition is maintained, normal cholesterol/triglycerides, blood pressure and weight is achieved. The "inevitable progress" would be slowed or stalled but how much improvement would you get on already existing complications? Would this mean that you could once again be regarded as non diabetic? Is the progress of this disease inevitable?

Too many questions I suppose but I can't help myself. :?:

Some complications can be reversed with good blood sugar control ,it depends just how far they have gone. For instance blurred vision can become clearer with good control but probably vascular damage would not.
Doctors will tell you that it is progressive but by trying to keep to as near non diabetic numbers as possible we can make that progression as far away as possible!!

One of my patients reversed his leg neuropathy and foot ulcers. He was numb/pain to the knee and had had the ulcer for 18 months and amputation was likely. It took five years but he has almost normal feet and legs now.

Another reversed his eye haemorrhages and maculopathy. From getting his eyes lasered every two months and a macular hole he has quiet eyes with reversing retinopathy and normal maculas. It took 18 months.

It can be done. Dr Bernstein was able to reverse his retinopathy, kidney damage, heart damage, and blood vessel calcification but could not reverse his droopy eye lids or foot deformities.

Thanks Katharine,I didn't realise that vascular complications could be reversed if there was a lot of damage to the blood vessels. That's even better then!!

There are plenty of stories on the web that back up Katharine's findings. No guarantees though, some people do everything wrong and live charmed lives, others do everything right and still get shafted BUT you can buck the odds significantly
