Conflicting readings?

I have used a onetouch ultra2 to test my blood for the last (i dont know how many) years but its been a long time!

Anyway, i fancied a change and got a bayer contour off this website.

Now when I do my readings there is a difference in the 2 machines by sometimes 4 or 5. E.g. My old machine said 21.6 and the new machine said 16.3. Although sometimes they are pretty much the same.

What would the reason for this difference be? It could end up very dangerous if I was low and one machine told me my reading was ok when in reality I was 2.1!!!!

You need to check your meters are not faulty, you should have got some control solution with each meter so you can check it.

Are you washing your hands/using the same blood sample for both tests? Little things can make a huge difference

When you get high readings the accuracy of the reading is not as good as the lower numbers. I've tested with the same machine twice on a high reading (a high reading wasn't expected so I did another test to make sure), there was about 1 mmol/l difference between the reading on the same meter and within a few minutes apart. When you get readings down in the 4's then the accuracy is much better.

I'm not sure about your meters but the Accu-chek Nano which we use has a control solution that you can order which will make sure that your meter is working accurately.

Yeah clean hands every time and using the same blood sample.

I have solution for my new machine, but how do you know what the correct reading is? I think it was 7.1 when i used the solution on my bayer contour

Yes, it is a problem they don't have to be that accurate to get a CE mark
95% of results should be:
within + or - 15mg/dl at glucose levels less than 75mg/dL
within 20% at BG concentration equal or greater than 75mg/dL.

(15mg/dl = 0.83mmol/l, 75mg/dl= 4.16)
so if your actual glucose was somewhere between the 2 then they would both fulfill the standards.
As Sophia says they do have to be more accurate at hypo levels.
