I'm sure your son will take to this a lot better than you will , if ever you need to scream or just talk there will be some one hear to listen and try to give some advice if we can , never be frightened to ask if there something you don't understand and never feel alone we will be here

I really do feel for you , I`m sure you will find help and support on here . Confusion and emotional thoughts are very natural, its hard being a Mum sometimes . I`m in my late 60`s and am also a carer, for my husband and also my young grandson , please don't be afraid to ask for help from your Mum in times of need .

Hello and welcome, I have been through the same thing with my granddaughter, she was diagnosed at 2 1/2 years and I was so upset and devastated. It is such a shock and parents and family can feel very scared and anxious at the prospect of a child with Type 1. But honestly kids are tough little cookies and they seem to just get on with it and cope well. My granddaughter is 6 now and a happy and healthy child, who does everything her friends do.
It will get a little easier in time and anything you would like to ask or just let off some steam, there are plenty of parents and other members here to help and support you. Your boy sounds a lovely little chap, you must be so proud of him.

Oh I know how you are feeling and it's all so overwhelming particularly straight after diagnosis. Just take each day as it comes and plan for the next, set short term goals. Your first goal is to sort work and please get the forms for disability living allowance and get your nurse to help you with it.
You will be able to carb count i can promise you this, you will do it cuz you will do anything for your boy. If you can get your hands on accucheck bolus advisor this will help.
Last thing is there is a great book i will send you a link for this has lots of useful information in it that will start to build your confidence.

Hi, our daughter was diagnosed 3 weeks ok and she will be 3yrs old in August so it sounds very similar. She also has took to the injections very well. 3 weeks in and we have claimed ourselves a little but it would be wrong to say we aren't a little scared, she is our daughter after all.

We keep to the positives....yes she is diabetic and yes we hate the idea of her having this illness but she has and there isn't much we can do about it. It could have been worse though, having family and friends who have been stricken by things such as Cancer is a test to that.

Our daughter and your son are young, they will grow up knowing no different which can only be a good thing. Yes there will be mistakes along the way but we learn and move on.

...and maybe....just maybe....by the time they reach your or my age then medical science will have eradicated, or at least approached the treatment in a less invasive way.

It must awful for you to have this happen; as a father I can completely empathise with your hurt on this.

However Type 1 diabetes is a manageable condition and it is not something that will curtail your son if you and he get to grips with it. I've been Type 1 since I was 10 and have had a very good, fun and active life and will continue to do so all being well.

This forum is a great resource; keep reading it!

There is a huge amount to learn but it you have a methodical and practical approach to managing diabetes then nothing is insurmountable.

The main thing with Type 1 diabetes is balancing carbohydrates that are eaten with insulin taken, I have no experience of managing diabetes in children but if one of my sons were to develop it I would very strongly push for a pump and if at all possible a constant glucose monitor; it seems anecdotally at least the easiest and best way; or I would like a very good explanation as to why they would not be appropriate.

Lastly, children are incredibly adaptable; your son will adapt and manage with your support and love. But as a parent I'm afraid the loss and sadness will probably be yours alone and not your child's; he won't know anything different - that's a double edged sword of course, but there we are.

This must be a terrible shock and a terrible worry; but this is not the end of the world it is just a new set of procedures to learn.

You can't "fix everything." No one can. You also can't do it all, and do it well. Sounds like you have adopted some very high expectations for yourself, and they may be external or internal. Sometimes we learn to demand a lot of ourselves because important others (like parents or partners) demand so much of us.

I am new to the forumand i cannot understand how so many people are so positive. I share the worries and feel like my 2 yo daughters diabetes is a permanently loose battle. I envy people diagnosed later in life as it seems they are so much steadier and more predictable. I can carbcount perfectly, work from home, have full support from my wonderful husband, Emily has pump and we attend all the possible appointments, but when we bought CGM last month I realised that her diabetesis anything but under control. When does it get better, anybody?
