Hello, Im looking for some advice...

So... a few weeks ago I self tested using my other halfs meter (accucheck mobile) and found my fasting glucose to be 6.1... am I right in thinking thats a wee bit high? (although i seem to find differing information on how high it is, some sources say anything up to 6 is normal, others say anything upto 5.6)

So, for the past few weeks Ive been making some lifestyle changes to try and reverse / improve this and ive started on a low carb diet (not no carb in fairness) , been exercising every day and Ive also lost some weight.

As a result of all the exercise ive had a few days where ive had sore muscles for a day or two after and my glucose seems a bit higher... is that normal?

Also, why is it my fasting glucose is high (5.7-6.1) but my preprandial later in the day is much lower (4.4) and my post prandial (at 2 hours) never goes higher than 7.2?

Im really sorry for all the questions, im just trying to get a handle on things and to make some sensible changes and assessments of the situation, my own GP has been less than helpful...

Hi @2018dude

Take a look at this information page..............

https://www.diabetes.co.uk/diabetes_care/blood-sugar-level-ranges.html
So your readings are pretty much in the non diabetic range, (the home blood glucose meters have an error range of +/- 15% so you shouldn't worry too much about being 0.5mmol over the idealised figures.)

Early morning readings can be higher because of something called dawn phenomenon whereby your liver secretes glucose to give you a kickstart. This is a normal bodily function.

But hey, keep up the lifestyle changes, it can only benefit you in the long run.;)

Yes, your readings look quite normal, especially factoring in the usual inaccuracies expected from a home testing meter.

The reason why the morning fasting reading is a little higher than other random pre-prandial readings, is that our body is 'designed' to release stored glucose (mainly stored in the Liver) to ensure that our BG doesn't drop too low, and also to ensure we have enough energy to leave the cave, sharpen a flint spear and hunt down a cup of tea and bacon sandwich.

Just out of interest, did you discuss these readings with your partner? If by some chance your OH did not have the answers it might be an idea to introduce her/him to this site. The knowledge base here is vast.

Just to add, excercise raises the blood glucose for a lot of people whether they have Diabetes or not.

You are so right there. If I walk to the kitchen and sit back on the sofa then straight away do a BG test, the result is higher. I do another test 5 mins later, then the result is lower. Every time this has happened. So I can see how exercise can give a higher result
